Give us back our Country

It is so heartening hearing that South Australia is now trying to nationalize the Electricity industry. Remember Australia had a Commonwealth Bank, the GIO, the PMG and above all we owned our resources. It was all owned by Australia and its people, us. We were rich. Australia was a country who had it all. The envy of the world.

And then, the ugliness of capitalism reared its head. It started with lowering taxation. Government after government  got in by waxing and manuring greed by promising to lower taxation. The inevitable shortfall of revenue was fixed by  selling everything under the sun. Leases on vast areas of our resources were sold to individuals who started  companies specialising in selling our previously owned coal, iron ore, uranium, silver, gold, oil and much  more to the highest bidders. Enormous profits were distributed to shareholders but not to the people who previously owned it all.

And then after selling off the resources that Australia has almost unlimited ownership off to private individuals, our Government owned bank,  The Commonwealth Bank, was sold off, followed by our own insurance company , The GIO, followed hot on the heels by Post Master General, morphing into the present Telstra. The Government had once again some more  revenue, enough to prop up creaking infrastructures, health, schools, roads, public transport.

But when all that money  went, poverty crept in once again. It became harder and harder to find the money. Increasing revenue through taxation  was electoral suicide. It was easier to allow poverty to creep into the masses. Pensions were cut, social services were cut, queues at hospitals became longer. The divide between the haves and have nots became wider. Educational levels lowered, students are now struggling to get basic language and numeracy skills. Skilled jobs were filled by importing overseas workers and so the list goes on.

The States too, got onto selling stuff. Water was privatised, and electricity. Poles and Wires with both water and electricity prices going through the roof. Shareholders are rubbing their hands in glee. Riches are made but only to the few. The money made out of selling public utilities are only short term solutions. It should never have happened. Australia should have kept control of its country. Why are French companies now running and determining the electricity prices in South Australia? It is crazy.

Is it time to take it back? Nationalise what previously was owned by us, the people. South Australia is on the way of doing that. We should applaud that. Did anyone watch the ABC’s Four Corners program on the state of the US. People earning such low wages, whole families living in tents or single rooms. Kids being fed packets of chips or stale pizzas. All those glittering advertisement, miles of MacDonald’s signs and the insane grinning Colonel Kentucky chickens running amok.  They are now the largest employers of people who get payed so little they are reduced to dismal poverty. They try and smile so heroically; what would you like with your chicken/ hamburger sir, they say while wearing a cap?

Surely proof of terminal capitalism in its death throes.

The Four Corners program was completely heartbreaking. Bravo for South Australia. I wish more politicians had the courage to set things back on track for this country.

We are just as destined to end up a poor man’s country with some of the richest individuals.
A report came in that in science and mathematics we are again falling behind.

I would so dearly have something to be proud of about Australia. But I am searching. Perhaps cricket, or the size of our T-bone steaks?

I don’t know. Holland has its liberalism and are coping with empty prisons. Geert Wilders’ influence is supposed to be waning as we speak.

Australia needs to do something to get back our national pride.

I agree with you and Leggypeggy, if only the other States would follow in the South Australian wake and buy back some of our important infrastructure. Four Corners showed what could lie ahead if we don’t change our ways. Well done, Gerard!

Yes, I hope change is in the air, Barbara.
The gas, water and electricity should never have been sold off. If it keeps going, Australia will sell and privatise the air we breath. Hang on , we already do, by being so lax in embracing renewables therefor fouling the world’s oxygen.
I do hope that more and more will cut off from the grid and teach those monopolists a good lesson.

Young people (and most of the population) need to be taught that voting is meant to be for the future of the country and all its people, not for perceived personal short term gain.

That’s spot on tulipels. I remember the last election in NSW, the selling off ‘poles and wires’ was dangled in front of the voters as an incentive. How barbaric.
It should have been totally rejected. The electricity prices are going up and shareholders are dancing around those awful poles.

Greed and capitalism I suppose are one and the same but maybe not. The US is doing just like Aussie land. Russians and Chinese and billionaires from Mexico, Spain, Middle East, South America own many of the banks, land and, businesses.

Things will never return to the good days. Sooner rather than later, Earth will be destroyed by one or two paranoid, hot headed rulers who are bat shit crazy.

    Sorry for the language.

What great news about South Australia trying to re-nationalize their electricity industry. Meanwhile New Zealand seems to be moving in the opposite direction. They have now sold off all but a 50% share in several state-owned power companies. This despite a 2012 citizens referendum in which over 60% of voters opposed selling them off.

You wonder what else could be sold. Perhaps bullying school kids or on-line versions of it could be privatized? Who knows?

Scores of governmental experts with MBA’s must be sunk deep in their creative criminality exploiting all sorts of devious areas.

Anything to make a dollar to sink into the corporate world.

The UK did the same – water, rail, oil, Post Office, electricity – it has made some people very rich and the chairmen of these companies earn salaries with idiotic numbers of 0s after them. Norway got it right and banked their oil revenue for the whole country – now they are all rich.

      Yes, Hilary.
I nearly used Norway as an example but hesitated. Each time I mentioned Norway in the past, especially on the ABC, a wave of trolls would give me a hard time. I don’t know why.
We recently had a CEO of the privatised Post Services being exposed of earning a yearly salary of several millions. He has since retired.
There you have it. A year’s salary and one can retire. He is probably right now whooping it up in Las Vegas sipping the Chandon Brut.

Last night we quaffed some of Aldi’s Precious Earth Shiraz. ($2.78 a bottle) A real corker!

Yes,,the NBN grumbles along,,trying make up for no communications infrastructure spending in decades. Meanwhile we have sold coal, gas and iron ore, cheap to Japan and China, so much so that they stockpile them. No spending on renewables. Ripped the guts out of the CSIRO. We can’t look to oir American cousins, the place is run by kooks.

Yes, we should all be quaffing something of an anaesthetic nature.

Yes, Big M, the NBN is something we also had no control over. We connected to NBN, had no other option. It is slower speed than before with regular drop-outs. If you want faster down-load speed you have to fork out more dollars.

It’s as if our wallets are connected to some kind of corporate sucking machine. No matter where you turn, the sucking continues. Often it is automatic and electronic, and it appears on statements. A sad kind of poetry that one reads.

In shopping malls that sucking money is at its worst and reaches its peak on Saturday mornings. That shrieking sound that one hears there, is the sound of money being sucked out automatically of thousands of shoppers through the magic of bank-cards that gets being swiped over and over again.

      It is deafening.

This is all so true, and it has happened in many other places (Iceland, for example). Nationalising things can be tricky, but probably less so in Australia than in member states of the EU. So go for it!

Yes, Rod. Our latest PM, Mr Malcolm Turnbull came up with a plan to generate more electricity by spending billions on some kind of future trickery.

There he was, majestically waving his arms, wearing a fluoro jacket and miner’s helmet, and like a modern Moses clambering down Mount Sinai, peered over a Snowy Mountains dam promising all will be wonderful, and by separating the Red Sea of debt, we should just follow him through the next decade or so when the lights will be turned on.

It will probably be sold off before it really happens. We better start stocking up on candles.

Trump is getting rid of everything previous administrations have fought so hard for. I think the States needs more candle factories too. The future seems uncertain. I almost hate to see the news each day. The man is stark raving mad.

If nationalizing industries were the panacea the left advocates then certainly Venezuela, Argentina, No. Korea, and Mexico among others would be economic and social paradise. Thankfully, the United States has not gone down that route and the election of Trump was a repudiation of that course.
