Poles and Wires

It is proof of how Australia is lagging behind in the rest of the world when it is considering selling and privatising our poles and wires or electricity grid. Poles and wires is old hat technology that is doomed in the not too far future. If you read about the subject it doesn’t take long to learn that enormous leaps are being made in alternative energy generation. A growing number of people are now relying on own energy generation and cutting supply from the grid. You can imagine not having to pay electricity bills anymore.

Solar panels are dropping in price and getting better. Battery technology is rapidly making advances and so are conversion methods, but above all storage of surplus solar energy in columns of salt in the form of heat. This heat gets transformed into electricity during times when there is no sun or during the night.

“Currently, solar panels in Australia produce energy at a cost of A10c per kilowatt hour or less, and it is likely that by 2020 this will fall to A6-7c per kilowatt hour or less. This puts solar power into a very competitive spot within the next five years. Of course this Government, if that’s what one could call this coterie of uninspiring limpid cowardly foreign queen genuflecting lovers, bending down (or backwards) grovelling bicycle seat sniffers, it is in it’s dismal lack of wisdom, now actually discouraging uptake of alternative energy generation. If ever there was proof this Government is against economic common sense, surely their stance on alternative energy is in this sloppy pudding.

People that have been savvy enough to have solar panels installed are now deliberately being punished by getting a much lower rate being paid from feeding solar generated electricity back into the grid ( export) than what they use from the same grid (import). To put is simply, electricity used from the grid might get charged at $0.30c a kilowatt, yet solar energy fed into the grid might just get $0.10 a Kilowatt. This is a deliberate attempt to discourage people from going solar in order to protect the big boys of the Billion dollar Energy Companies. (Poles and wires)

Of course, this might well work in reverse. As solar panels become cheaper and the science in storage gallops ahead, many will simply cut off from the grid and be free from poles and wires. This is already happening in many countries and of course in Australia many farmers and rural communities have done without coal generated electricity for decades, relying on generators, batteries and recently solar energy. The more the price of coal generated (power and poles) electricity goes up, the more attractive and cheaper will be the option for people and communities to free themselves form the tyranny of the Energy companies.

I can’t imagine that if the decision to sell the ‘power and poles’ by this NSW Government, it will be met with much enthusiasm from the public or the large Super Funds. It might be a hard sell.

I hope so.

I’m beginning to think you don’t rate Aussie politicians. Anyway, your analysis is spot on.

You can always make me laugh Gerard, even when you talk of serious issues. We have solar and are planning to go off the grid as soon as we can afford the batteries. Solar is the way forward! You are quite right about everything you say about our politicians. They will sell everything not nailed down, to help their figures look better.

I remember when Frazer was our PM and some wit thought of manufacturing rolls of toilet paper with his face on every sheet. As it turned out Frazer came good. He even resigned from his own party (liberal). Fancy a PM brave enough to do that?
      There is hope!

Good, truthful post, once again, Gerard. We can do something about this month. There will be an election later this month.

Yes, let’s hope they’ll be sunk like they did in Queensland. Am already stocking up on chips, gherkins and herrings for the big count on the night of the election with Jonathan Green leading us along with all the seats swinging over to labour.

Hey, don’t hold back! Tell us what we really think of this bunch of losers!!! 🙂

Sure, this is the way it is!
Thanks, Gerard, for this very thoughtful article.

A masterful article. Well done. Yes, solar power is the wave of the future but the biggies are not helping. And, of course the energy companies want to keep making oodles of money off of folks that need heat and electricity. Same thing here in the states.

Finally solar power will be the winner as fossil fuel energy won’t be able compete with something that comes from the sun and is free. Well, not totally free, but cheaper and better than anything else.

Gerard, I shall keep you posted on the progress of smart grids that will make poles and wires redundant. Community solar is going through a growth spurt, however the use of the existing and still publicly owned infrastructure is a stumbling block that needs legislation change. I am part of a group that just received a grant to develop a blueprint for community owned medium scale solar farms. The big 4 are trying hard to stop the flow, but storage is rapidly becoming cheaper and smarter. 10 years from now poles and wires will become white elephants.

Very well put John and welcome to this blog of like-minded souls. I am convinced we will see the beginning of the end of coal fired energy and poles and wires dominating our street scapes.

In this crazy world, you may find that privatising the poles and wires means that little patches of land across the country belong to a company who can stop you doing something which requires passing through their patch, or having the right to generate your own electricity within a five mile radius or something absurd. Look out for the small print!

In the event of someone producing more solar/wind energy/electricty than they can use, the Electricity Companies are not paying you for the surpluss energy. They only give you a ‘credit’. Of course if one keeps exporting more than importing but never see the money. What is the point?
This just shows you what a dreadful anti-clean energy place Australia is. They are pro-active in discouraging alternative energy.
All this makes for a disconnect from the grid more of an incentive.
      It will happen.
John is right it needs a change in legislation.

The current electrical grid is so incredibly inefficient (in the US it’s estimate that 61-86% of the energy generated is lost) that it’s high time it was scrapped to be replaced with more efficient local distributed energy system. With distributed energy, local neighborhoods and communities produce their own energy rather than transmitting it over long distances.

The grid system was never created with the interest of consumers in mind. It was created to make it easier for energy produces to “trade” energy, which apparently where the real profit is made.

I believe that the electricity generating companies are stuck on poles and wires because they receive all sorts of tax advantages for how much infrastructure they build each year. So of course, it is in their interest to build more new infrastructure even when it is not really needed. It disgusts me to think that governments are deliberately discouraging investment in renewable energies. Australia should be the world’s leader in production of solar panels and power. Imagine how many solar farms we could have in rural areas, (and a few jobs along the way too, perhaps). Europe is way ahead in this regard, and we are stuck importing solar panels from cold countries like Germany or Canada, for goodness sake!! The irony is suffocating!!!Thanks for raising awareness of this essential issue.
