The Grandkids and chicken thighs.

our 3 grandsons

There was ‘n early phone call. Our daughter was asked to work at short notice and had no time to arrange her normal contact to pick up her son from school. We have in the past done lots of emergency and not so emergent baby sitting or child minding. So, we obliged this time as well and will drive to Sydney in couple of hours.

I did a quick dash to Aldi and bought chicken thighs and broccoli. Helvi was doing her Pilatus at the local hall next to a Presbyterian church. They have a large sign outside with “Jesus only uses ARMS to hold you.” They also offer free lunch and a cup-o-tea. Bless their souls.

The grandson Max is a resolute vegetable hater since birth when even within an hour or so of his birth he already scoffed at broccoli and onions. 😉 However, as a gesture of great love for his mum and us he will consider a temporary lowering of his anti vegetable stance and lick the broccolini if enough encouragement and urging on is applied together with a $5.- inducement. That’s how it goes and don’t get me going on parental guidance or advice. We still want a few years of life.

Odd how some genes don’t get passed. Both our daughter and her parents (including us) are consummate vegetable eaters. Helvi more than me. There is not a food that I won’t eat except brown vegemite and lumpy porridge. I can still remember my mother opening a jar of brown back in 1957. The horror, the horror? Talk about dysfunctional upbringing!

I have to keep this piece a bit short. I still have to boil some rice and let the lot cool off before putting it in a couple of handy clip-on lidded plastic containers. H has just arrived back from her Pilatus and looks all rosy-a-glow and ravishing.

That’s how it goes.

I look forward to vegetables – particularly cauliflower and turnips – and wouldn’t care if I never saw meat.
A German visitor to our house once said with a sneer ‘We only feed turnip to our animals.’
    Fortunate animals!

I thought in Australia most of the vegetables were in parliament?

Same with out grandkids although they have become a lot less picky with age. As for broccoli, I confess to really liking it with a little mayonaise applied. I get the kid bit, however. –Curt

The other two grandkids love vegetables, but for Max…he loves his chicken and meat but will rarely eat vegetables. He chokes on them so…you can’t force it. You are right, with time I think he’ll get to eat them.

I got a good laugh from your story about the grandkids and the one that will not eat vegetables. When my son was a youngster he would choke on melons and chicken. He is now in his 40’s and eats these food items with no problem. Sometimes it isn’t a dislike of a food and maybe it is an allergy to the food.

      Glad it made you laugh;
I was so happy to get anything edible or drinkable ( just after the war) that in a frenzy of hunger and excitement I bit so keenly on my glass of cordial it broke in my mouth.

Max, our grandson did eat some of the broccolini last night. He loved the chicken thighs and had two helpings. Always a good sign.

As a child, on rare occasions when we ate at a restaurant, I always ordered a vegetable plate. I would still rather eat them than meat. Veg and dessert sounds about right.

Broccoli, I adore the stuff. I can eat mountains of it. I love cauliflower too but it makes me fart like billy-o – one of the reasons that I cannot attend pilates or yoga classes 😉

I can tell you are in robust health, Lottie. I would have thought in a group such as Pilatus a fart could easily be hidden or at least shared by all the participants.
I was in a lift once and ripped one silently amongst a group of lawyers with briefs in hands. I kind of looked around indignantly but most of them just suffered in total silence and ignorance. Stuffy lawyers.
