We are now packing the solar lit twinkling lights back in their boxes. It will be a year before the sun will light them up once again. Soon the cards will follow suit. All in the box or in the green lidded re-cycling bin. The last of the ham and chicken has been given to Milo. Post Christmas blues are on the radio and soon life will get back to normality. I love normality. Let the gas bill arrive in the mail box together with the usual Evangelical pamphlets to ‘repent and seek the Lord.’ A vain request for many, most seek salvation in Bunnings, Walmart or Aldi.
Soon the first cigarette will be lit up by those having made the resolution to not do so. Those tortured by food will get the first pangs of hunger, so…just a packet of marsh mellows will bring relief. The lure of the pink ones. It brings back sweet memories of the kids around the camp fire toasting them on the end of a stick. What’s wrong with that? We have to be able to receive those crumbs of joy from somewhere, anywhere really. Life is so short, they say.
We hope that the shortness of that life will continue for Schumacher. The world is hanging onto every word coming from teams of Hospital’s doctors. A whole pack of reporters have taken over entire hotels. Every nuance, every word is carefully weighed , rolled around and looked at again emanating from anyone slightly connected to the racing driver , all studied with the precision of a Swiss watch. Dodgy priests are now being scanned for a possible connection to the Neurologie department of the Hospital. Hundreds of cameras are trained on the room that he might be in. The slightest movement, even of the hospital curtain, makes headlines around the world. Angela Merkel has even offered words of comfort to the anxious world hoping for his recovery.
We quickly flick past a news’s item of beheadings of children in far away places peopled by those wearing black beards and medieval fanaticism. It is a difficult world. Just because the world turns over another year, so much seems to stand still. We too hope for the recovery of yet another young boy being King hit on New Years Eve. This was within metres of someone being killed by a King hit earlier in 2012.
Is it little wonder we want a marsh mellow?
When will we ever learn?

Now, it’s been far too long since I’ve had a marshmallow, and this post was a deliciously sugar-free treat, for sure. I may not be longing for a cig, but I will definitely be one of those grappling with visions of toasted puffy squares of goo in the coming days. Thanks so much for giving me something else to obsess about. Missed you and your fun writing!

Interesting observations. I don’t smoke and I don’t crave marshmellows. Don’t even crave the news. But I do hope and wish for an end to malice and evil in the world.
And I wish for the German man’s recovery. I didn’t know of the man until I read about his accident in the Internet news.

I had heard of him being a car racer. He has had accidents before with speed driving. I don’t crave marsh mellows either but remember our kids being very keen to toast them above an open fire in the bush when we used to go camping.

I sat in his F1 car once. Couldn’t get out – car was too small. Shame about the skiing accident but yes, our priority seems to be to follow the fate of the famous and ignore the plight of the anonymous multitudes. I made no new year resolutions so I have none to break. I am agnostic on the subject of marshmallows. Wouldn’t refuse one but never seek them out. I am not sure I can repent until I have pented. I’ll give it a go.

That’s what is so wonderful about Christmas in the middle of winter, it’s all over in no time. No lingering hot days of summer to get listless, restless and sunburned. Back to work, school etc and life goes on as I hope it does for Michael Shumacher who is not headlining the news here. Too much seems to be happening with Sudan and the latest episode of Sherlock!

Yes, Schumacher dominates news here, and the great pains of the world have dropped down the agenda. Around New Year’s Day we send cheques from our CAF account to five particular charities. I found myself near to tears just deciding who, among so many in desperate need, should get the slim pickings from us. Even adding another five from our ordinary accounts left me feeling the inadequacy of our gesture.
We have a very beautiful old recording of the Red Russian Army Choir, but this was something else!

I know the feeling. Whom to give first, that is the question. I have a few charities that are not in the news at all. You are right the Red Army Choir is something else and out of this world. They are still around. We saw them on stage too.
The Russian people are great human beings, not really recognised around the world. They saved us all from Fascism and might have to save us again.
In the mean time you, I and many other people, we do what we can to take some pressure off the more unfortunate.

I think I know how you feel.
It seems weekly that people are being blown apart, hacked, punched and raped. It is sad that Mr Schumacher is not well but he has been lucky and his light, very bright.
As far as learning is concerned, for humans, it seems to take awhile.
